There is a lot of conversation about young people “falling behind” if schools don’t up despite high transmission rates in communities where schools exist.
It is apparent that schools, kids and families aren’t necessarily equipped to engage in virtual learning in this environment.
But this was an issue before the pandemic. Kids were constantly falling behind. Schools have struggled mightily. Teachers had to make do with not a lot of support. Maybe COVID will force us to examine whether the methods by which kids are educated really work.
It’s just not about getting kids back in school because that’s what we believe is best. It’s about when the doors are open kids, teachers and schools are equipped to really thrive.
Because right now, and historically, all we’ve tried to do when it comes to education, is survive. This crazy year does not change that reality.
