One of the best things to happen to me in grad school was the opportunity to teach a 200-level modern military history course. I *thought* I was a military historian before; I was wrong. I was a military historian of 1861-1865.
Teaching that class opened up the length & breadth of military history to me, from the ever murky Revolution in Military affairs to Napoleon to the World Wars...I could go on. It gave me greater context and understanding of the American Civil War and U.S. military legacy.
I think Civil War folks can be insular at times (or at least I was). There's real value in exploring military history on a wider scale!
