People keep sending me this article about how Hallmark movies are horrible from the New York Post expecting me to be offended. I've been doing this for 4 years. It's not new. Just another example of people belittling a harmless entertainment many women get joy out of
Obviously men enjoy Hallmark movies but for many years entertainment targeted to women was demeaned and ridiculed. Equally dopey male oriented action and testosterone fueled entertainment rarely gets such pieces.
This is true in literature with romance novels. And don't even try to make something for teenage girls. Out of the question
You can go even back to something like Little Women. Rarely is it mentioned as one of the seminal novels despite it having mass appeal and remaining relevant to this day. Why? It's women's literature and too light and fluffy to be the type studied and analyzed
How is it any lighter than Mark Twain novels for example written at the same time?
Women's fiction and women's film has always been looked at askew and been held to impossibly high standards. It can't just be entertainment and provide joy.
Of course some maybe even a lot of it is worthy of criticism and if anyone has listened to @HallmarkiesPod we dish out a lot of it but branding a genre as horrible and unworthy speaks to a deeper misogyny and underlying problem
In the meantime Hallmark will keep making these sweet romance films that tons of women love and laugh all the way to the bank. Keep writing your horrible movie posts and we'll enjoy our cocoa and near kisses
