THREAD: Talks of @PeteButtigieg as a leading contender for the Department of Transportation are very interesting. First, his experience transforming South Bend's street grid set a standard for how transportation can revitalize and transform downtowns.
Second, his experience navigating multiple layers of transportation bureaucracy as a local official would provide a great lens for the department and help make it relevant again. He would also walk into the department with a robust network of local officials who need DOT help.
Third, cities across the nation are caught in the middle of transportation evolutions where roads are becoming less important and multi-modal transportation and pedestrian friendly designs are more important. Pete knows this and helped shepherd this philosophy in South Bend.
Finally, he has a way of seeing years ahead of where bureaucracies currently are, where they need to be, and then creatively shaping future oriented policies while effectively communicating them to the layperson. Having a DOT Secretary help local leaders do this will be key.
In sum, I'm biased in wanting to see @PeteButtigieg in a foreign policy position so that he can help us rebuild and reaffirm foreign alliances, hold our adversaries accountable for their actions, and reclaim respect and admiration across the globe. But...
if DOT Secretary is where he lands, I am excited to see what he can do for cities across the nation because I know how much potential he has and the knowledge and skillset he will bring to the position.
*Adding a few more:

Infrastructure will be a MAJOR focus for Congress and the Biden Administration. The Trump Infrastructure Week never actually happened, so now it's up to Biden to deliver. DOT will be key to this. Pete will have a chance to flex legislative chops on a bill.
And finally, Pete had a robust infrastructure plan while running for President that will easily translate to a Biden agenda. Also, for all the policy wonks and South Bend fans, SMART SEWERS!
