A petition put forward in the House of Assembly yesterday for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to make a blanket rejection of a proposed Protected Areas Plan for the Island of Newfoundland.
It is essential that all members of the House of Assembly support the WERA legislation. This responsibility has been shirked and ignored by government for decades. Hence the confrontational crises at hand.
Crisis also spawns opportunity and that should be the focus of current deliberations. WERAC carried out their mandate as legislated under the terms of the act and presented the plan to government. People on the Northern Peninsula were taken aback with the Protected Areas Plan.
What is needed now is the courage to reach across perspectives and to extend a hand across barriers to the common ground we share about the value and importance of our natural environment.
This suggestion is not misconstrued optimism, rather it is the only way that we can constructively and effectively move forward to engage and resolve the pressing issues at hand. We are in this together.
We did not invent the climate crisis. We did not invite the covid crisis, but when events like these impact us one and all, we know that the only viable option is to support one another and move forward together.
We have the opportunity to do so now.
We have the opportunity to do so now.
