a thread (by a nonbinary person) on why you should stop calling nonbinary people “they/thems” “m’they’dys” “gentlethems” and things related.
to start off, “m’they’dy” and “gentlethem” are derived from the words m’lady and gentleman, which are not gender neutral terms. throwing they/them pronouns in the middle of them doesn’t make it gender neutral.
to add to this, referring to someone as a “they/them” is extremely belittling. for example, saying “what’s wrong they/them?” first of all, since when are somebody’s pronouns a noun? second of all, you don’t see people saying “what’s wrong she/her” or “what’s wrong he/him” +
so why is it suddenly different when it comes to somebody that uses they/them? it seems like you’re babying us because of our gender and seems subtly enbyphobic. you may not be trying to be enbyphobic but belittling us to our pronouns because of our gender +
is actually really unsettling and uncomfortable. it’s getting to the point where it reminds me when people would baby trans men on tumblr in 2014. if your friend says they’re okay with you calling them that, then great! but your friend doesn’t speak on behalf of all of us.
majority of us are really tired of it, and its very upsetting when CIS people play it off because they “think it’s fine” or their “friend said they’re fine with it.” you don’t get to speak over nonbinary people who are speaking on something that involves nonbinary people.
so please, I, and others, are asking you to stop. if you’re cis, you do not get any say in this thread or the situation overall. this is for nonbinary people to discuss and nonbinary people only.
end of thread.
