I don't want to go all history minor on this, but a few facts:
1. the north had slaves, they did not start the war over slavery + did not have to give up their slaves under the emancipation proclamation. it was not about human rights for them. (1/3) https://twitter.com/hereticalshrew/status/1337126209604341760
2. abe lincoln was not an abolitionist for human rights reasons, he was a member of a group of individuals that wanted slavery abolished so there'd be more jobs for white people. it was not about human rights for him until the emancipation proclamation. (2/3)
3. it was in essence about states' rights on both sides, states' rights to own slaves and states' rights to not own slaves (for economic reasons that supported white settlers). neither side cared a piddle about human rights. (3/3)
the idea that the civil war was about human rights is revisionist history in itself. slavery was abolished, and although this was a good thing it was done in many ways for political dominance and not because of a true belief in human rights.
