We need your help, more than you think! #ClimateActionInYourArea #TogetherForOurPlanet #NetZeroNeedsNuclear #COP26
#COP26 is a great opportunity to get the youth voice heard at the highest levels and bring down emissions globally.
Electricity generation is a big part of getting to #netzero. Emissions from how we generate electricity go into our atmosphere, and as transport becomes electric we need more electricity than ever before!
Electricity can be generated in a number of ways, burning #coal, #gas, #oil and #biomass or in low carbon ways like #solar, #wind, #nuclear, #hydro.
We believe in using ALL the low carbon options we can in order to reach NetZero. Unfortunately, one that's commonly overlooked is nuclear power. I wonder why?
We know that nuclear power is clean, safe, and affordable. Just ask South Korea! Nuclear power supplied 23% of its electricity, carbon free. But unfortunately they also use a lot of coal, which sadly can be dangerous.
In the upcoming year we’re using our grassroots, youth led movement to engage policy makers and negotiators in the run up to #COP26 @COP26. We need your help! If you don't know anything about nuclear, or want to find more about how it can help, read on.
Fossil fuel lobbies have campaigned against nuclear for years, they know that nuclear is the only competitor to them. Renewable lobbies have been shown to be funded by anti-nuclear lobbyists as they need to be backed up by gas.
In 1970, a leader of the petroleum industry and the head of the Atlantic Richfield Co. named Robert O. Anderson contributed $200,000 to fund Friends of the Earth, an organization that is strident in its opposition to nuclear energy. https://bit.ly/378htzX
As a direct result of Nuclear power replacing fossil fuel sources, more than 60 Giga-tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions have been avoided globally since 1970, preventing an estimated 1.8 million air pollution related deaths on average, according to the @IEA
It is estimated that a further 7 million deaths could be avoided by 2050 if Nuclear power replaces fossil fuel usage on a large scale. 7 million. That’s almost the population of Hong Kong. Let that sink in.
Despite the impressive growth of solar and wind power, the overall share of clean energy sources in total electricity supply in 2018, at 36%, was the same as it was 20 years earlier because of a decline in the share of nuclear generation over the time period @IEA .
The consensus across major international institutions is that all low carbon technologies, including Nuclear, will need to be deployed urgently and at scale in order to achieve Net Zero targets.
@OECD_NEA @IPCC
International experts on climate @IPCC, say that all four illustrative pathways for limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C show the need for new Nuclear, with a two-fold to six-fold increase in capacity by 2050.
But we can’t do it with the current mindset! @EUClimateAction is saying that nuclear isn't eligible to receive funding like renewables. @EUcomission #sustainablefinanceeu

The most recent sad news comes from the Belgian @groen party in power who wants to phase out nuclear and is asking to subsidise gas as a replacement. Let them know your views!

We know it works. Look at Sweden, Ontario and a few other of the largest economies to decarbonise rapidly. Sweden dropped their emissions in less than 20 years by 75% by committing to nuclear and hydro.
We need you to help spread the word, nuclear energy is such a gift, but public perception is literally stopping its rollout and it's getting it shut down in places.
Please help us spread the word. Climate change - Hit you with that nnu-nu nnu-nu nu-(clear)
On top of all this, nuclear medicine saves millions of lives and supports the @UN_SDG
Great page on it here: https://bit.ly/3qRmJQG
How you like that?
What about nuclear waste?
A good thread here on it: https://twitter.com/ShellenbergerMD/status/1195336785833803776
