I would like to address questions that have been raised about WCB coverage for PTSD & other psychological injuries. It’s important for all workers to know they have access to the WCB system, including coverage for PTSD. /1
Research shows strong evidence that some occupations have a greater likelihood of developing PTSD. That is why Bill 47 maintains presumptive WCB coverage for first responders including firefighters, paramedics, peace officers & police officers. /2
Presumptive PTSD coverage for first responders has existed in Alberta since 2012 & that hasn't changed. We have also kept presumptive coverage for correctional officers & 911 dispatchers, which were added in 2018. /3
We have added the ability for other occupations to be granted presumptive coverage for PTSD through regulation. If evidence supports adding other occupations to the presumptive coverage list in future, we won't need to change the Act to do so. /4
The NDP added presumptive coverage for all workers from all occupations, which created significant issues & threatened system sustainability. All workers continue to have PTSD coverage through the normal WCB process. /5
