My theory on SW: its vision of sci-fi is largely mechanical (switches, levers, giant lasers, walkers) because that’s what sci-fi was in the serials that influenced George Lucas growing up. Dials, knobs, pipes, rockets. There was no real concept of software. https://twitter.com/ericwenger/status/1337494257486192651
But Lucas had the genius to sense that something else was needed to tie his universe together: the Force. Essentially, a layman’s intuition of networks and software. The Jedi are programmers.
The director who DID grasp what software was going to mean for technology was Stanley Kubrick with 2001. HAL, and then the monolith, are the personification of inscrutable, even terrifying, software. The hardware is just there to power the software.
