Sitting in my apartment lobby, a delivery man comes up and asks how much rent was in my building. I used my AAC to respond, “Too expensive.”

He gestures to my device and says says, “Aww, that’s incredible, bless your heart! Have a merry Christmas, sweetheart. Bye, I love you!”
I get so frustrated at people seeing my communication as this inspiring, amazing thing, while at the same time completely disregarding whatever I’m actually communicating. It’s so rare that I get to just have a regular conversation with a stranger.
People either get weird like this and make a huge deal over my device, talk about how amazing it is, get really patronizing, or they just get frustrated and don’t seem to try to understand how I communicate at all.
Please just talk to me like a human being, give me a little extra time to answer, but don’t patronize me or talk to me like I can’t understand anything you say.
