🧵 Today Canada announced a new climate plan: A Healthy Environment & Healthy Economy.

There are definitely good things in this plan, but there are a few huge gaps

1. The plan leaves most of the lifting to a higher carbon price, w/out fixing the loopholes for large emitters https://twitter.com/envirodefence/status/1337491605067075585
2. The GHG modelling still hasn’t been made available, but the plan says this will bring us to a 40% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030

Canada's #FairShare under Paris is a 60% reduction by 2030.

This is still a long way off where we need to be

3. This plan doesn't address the two largest sources of GHGs in Canada: #oilandgas & road transportation

The steps to reduce these emissions are well-known:
-no new fossil fuel projects
-a phase-out of fossil fuel production & use
-an electric vehicle mandate

#cndpoli
4. There are no new announcements for a #JustTransition.

We need fair transition plan for workers and communities who rely on the fossil fuel sector, and everyone who will be impacted by the transition to a decarbonized economy
5. The govt announced an investment of $15 billion for this plan.

That's a fraction of what other govts have committed to their #GreenRecovery

Even worse, one-third of the $15 billion is actually going to the largest polluters
