Seeing a number of comments on here about the London Philharmonic performance last night, and about orchestras in general. I've played in orchestras most of my life, so here's my thought of the day about the orchestra medium and vgm.
What I love most about working in video game music is working with composers who reimagine the sounds that they are working with. I absolutely love being part of an orchestra or chamber group that is then combined with synth sounds, electric instruments, midi instruments.
That sort of experience opens up new worlds for me in thinking about how an orchestra can function and what my role can be in music. It's absolutely incredible.
So I hope there continues to be a role for orchestras in game scoring, and I hope that my fellow musicians continue to derive creative inspiration from this process and remember that making music is all about being part of something larger, something greater.
I was disappointed seeing the LPO and how disengaged they were from their performance, and I don't think they were getting much inspiration from what they were doing. In the classical music world, I hope we can do a better job of respecting the amazing world that is vgm.
