listening to my child's 2nd grade teacher tell the kids to ask their parents what country their family comes from and thinking about the fact that my son is the descendants of slaves and no one alive *really* knows but that saying that we come from America is not acceptable...
Imagine the confusion when I try to explain ancestry dna . com and why, despite the "dna results," we can't really go around saying were from Nigeria or Scotland.

We live in a diverse area. most of the students could say, "my family is from..." except the American black kids.
She asked the kids to share family cultural traditions. American culture IS Black culture, but part he didn't share b/c he can't differentiate such nuance (he's 7). Therefore, he feel less "special" esp when the white American kids talk about being Italian, for example.
