I really don’t like the virtue signaling pics of docs and nurses. In my opinion it’s professionally degrading and demeaning to the whole.

Our job is to care for our patients and not to elicit sympathy from them or others.

So when you pull off your PPE straighten your hair...
and put a smile on your face. Find a way to show confidence, concern, and that you are still very capable and ready to go.

And if you can’t do this I’d suggest maybe this job isn’t for you.

I’m not saying I don’t empathize. Indeed I do and very much so. I’m very concerned...
not only for my patients, but my staff and community too.

This is a rough time. I know. I’ve been thru the mass casualties, hurricanes, diversions, and lockdowns. I’ve been on duty for 96hrs before. I’ve had patients die from lack of resources.

What we’re facing is not usual...
and that is the basis of PTSD.

I’m worried because I’ve seen teenagers for attempted suicides. I’m distressed because I’ve had little old ladies break down in tears because they can’t see their grandkids. I’ve walked in to rooms and seen patients that look like a Frank Netter...
drawing of depression.

And I’m a goddam ER doc- I shouldn’t be seeing this shit! Why should I be looking up Al Anon (888-425-2666) for patient families?

So yeah, I know it’s bad. But guess what dear colleagues- this ain’t going away. So you better buck up. Slick back your...
hair, put on your makeup and a smile, and go let your patients and the public know things will be ok. Don’t let anyone take a less than flattering picture of you.

Look, I know you guys are suffering. Constant stimulation, sleep disruption, illness, lack of exercise, poor...
nutrition, etc, etc. This will begin to translate into marital, financial, social, emotional, and health issues.

You need to expect this and take steps to mitigate these problems. Remember, each shift is like a football game. You prepare for it with a strict schedule, proper...
nutrition, training, exercise, rest, and sleep. To be able to perform at your best means you prepare well. Pay attention and spend time with your spouse and kids. Avoid alcohol and drugs. Most importantly is to spend 15 minutes daily communing with the Lord from your knees.
The next most important thing is to commit to not making any rash or hasty decisions. We know docs have a decision to bullet time of 7.5 minutes- so don’t be an asshole and fuck everything up for everyone else.

Give your colleagues your cell number and you put theirs on ...
your "favorites" list so your phone will ring whenever they call. Trust me, my fat ass or someone else will be at your front door in 5.

We are there for you. You have my word.
