After reading the list of 106 representatives signing on to support the Texas “overthrow-the-election” case, I went on a “shallow dive” into the gender divide in the US House of Reps. There were

A LOT

of men on that list and a handful of women. 1/
So...I googled “Republican women House of Representatives” and found a site that lists the all of the women serving in the 116th Congress.

Women
101 (88D, 13R), plus 4 (2D, 2R) Delegates

Total House
435 (233D, 197R, 4 vacancies) 2/
Grabbed my calculator for a little math here.

23% of all representatives are women. At the end of the second decade of the 21st century.

I know this is not new news, but pause here for a second and let that number sink in...fewer than a quarter!! 3/
Seems bad

And then I crunched the percentages for the parties
38% of all Democratic representatives are women
Close to 40%
Closing in on half 4/
So what drives the total number below 25%?

Only
6.5%
of
Republican
Representatives
are
women

SIX POINT FIVE percent

6.5

Closer to 5 than 10
5/
Run these numbers by race and the story is the same

This lack of diversity in our power centers is harming us

The proof is everywhere (climate, covid, justice, inequality, poverty)
