Right, maybe the twitterverse can help me out. I can’t understand why a common reply to Scottish teacher tweets about wanting to be treated with a small amount of care is to shout that we shouldn’t moan because we were at home from March to August. 1/
Let’s just be clear....SO WAS EVERYONE ELSE! But unlike some people, we worked, a lot. Like A LOT. Now I actually don’t harbour any resentment against those on furlough or those still working from home. Let’s be honest, it’s all beyond our control. 2/
But why does me working (my ass off) from home from March till June mean that I am not entitled to a duty of care from my employer? 3/
I am a secondary teacher and I work with minimal ppe (which I provided), some blue roll, pink spray, and a masking tape line (which I applied) to mark out a rough ‘exclusion zone’ space for myself. I’m freezing most of the day (windows and door always open). 4/
My pupils are freezing and wearing coats to stay warm. I’m tired. They are tired. I’ve never seen pupils so tired. S2’s looking like shells of themselves. It’s not right. 5/
The stress of this pandemic has taken its toll on everyone. Teachers, as a profession, have continued to show up every day, but we continue to do so without the support from the SG that other frontline workers have received. And let’s be VERY clear 6/
EVERY SINGLE PERSON who has stepped up in a frontline job and got on with it is amazing. We ALL need to and deserve to be treated with care from our employers. ALL OF US. This is NOT a contest. 7/
Asking for a bit of space to make sure we don’t bring COVID to our Christmas dinners, or to make sure we don’t return to a massive COVID outbreak is not much to ask. So I ask again, why is my working from home March to June mean I am not to be cared for by my employer? 8/
