Short thread on social media: I had a short comradely exchange with my old friend @paulmurphy_TD this morning on social media reflecting real world schisms and it caused me to reflect on it today. It’s worth keeping in mind that social media is owned and manipulated by big tech
Companies. It also only imperfectly, with bias and partially reflects its users. It does not reflect humanity. It does reflect the politics of the world. It does not reflect real political struggle, although it can be a tool in this. Some facts or stats to keep in mind when we
Think about political rifts, class, oppression and struggle. Twitter has about 152 million active users, the worlds population is close to 8 billion. Top two countries for twitter use are the US and Japan. Egypt is the only African country in the top 20 of Twitter usage despite
There being 5 African countries in the top 20 by population. Most twitter users are in large western cities and earn above the average wage of those countries. 80% of tweets come from 10% of users. Also worth factoring that there is plenty of medical evidence that social media
Is addictive and can create chemical reactions in our bodies and that usage can be biased toward generating that chemical reaction. The point of this short thread is merely a reminder that social media is not the political struggle. It’s a tool and one that is owned by others
Which manipulates as well as influences some users behaviours. It reflects a small percentage of a particular segment of the world. It does not reflect the schisms that exist across this world.
