To say that the entirety of my life as a Bills fan has been one massive disappointment is truly an understatement. I often fail to adequately express just how disgustingly mediocre/god awful this franchise has been for the past 20+ years. 3/
There were glimmers of hope. The Trent Edwards stretch of good games, Ryan Fitzpatrick was once a god for a like 4 weeks, and the one year where it seemed like Doug Marrone was turning it around before he bolted because the GM was a fucking idiot. 4/
But I also remember when Brian Moorman and Rian Lindell were the best players on the team (punter & kicker) when Eric Moulds was wasted playing with a washed Drew Bledsoe in horrendously colored jerseys. I remember beating the Pats 31-0 to start the season and then collapsing 5/
I remember it all. Every JP Losman, EJ Manuel, even fuckin’ Kelly Holcomb wannabe savior came and went. And every year, by November, my family and I would partake in the ritual of trashing our team. 6/
But now, I feel something totally unrecognizable: hope. We might actually be good. And yet, all those years of being kicked around by the Pats in the AFC East and being the doormat of the NFL has trained me not to get too excited. 7/
So when Peter Schrager and Bill Simmons say the Bills are the only team that can take on the Chiefs, I shake my head. I can’t believe it. I won’t Billieve. 8/
It’s too hard to get your hopes up every year, sitting in an old Jim Kelly uniform at a Beef O’ Brady’s watching JP Losman toss a couple picks, realizing the start of the season actually just ended for your stupid team. You wonder why you still even like them. 9/
But maybe, just maybe, this GM/Coach duo, who focused on culture and drafted this gun slingin’ kid from Wyoming that no one believed in (including me) can change my mind. 10/
I know this is a long thread so I’ll wrap up...
It’s easy to be a bandwagon fan, buying a Brady/Vick/Mahomes etc. jersey.
It’s not easy to be loyal, having the world tell you that you suck, and have your hopes beat out of you year after year. 11/
