For those who have never had to worry about medical expenses and oppose #UniversalHealthCoverage: I broke my ankle to no fault of my own and had an ER visit, surgery, and overnight hospital stay. The total cost was for this was $89,338.74.
I’m extremely privileged in that my program provides insurance and my parents have medical insurance and I’m 25, thus still covered with them.
If I did not have this privilege, I would be stuck with nearly $100k of medical bill debt to pay within 30 days of my accident. Which, I can’t bear weight on my ankle for 10 weeks and thus would be unable to work.
I’m especially lucky that my injury wasn’t life threatening and that I don’t require continued care. Still, I honestly don’t know what I would do if I was responsible for that whole sum. Identify you privilege and have compassion for those around you.
