In most outlets, what I talked about has been covered as a 'radical far left' approach. Politico decided to cover this as us 'loving Biden.' Just shows you how much the political, left-right frame, for covering actual ideas is full of shit. https://twitter.com/evanlweber/status/1337438106136551427
I'd encourage people to read the interview, not just the headline. I'm talking about how Biden can rebuild the American economy. Not just a few billion of relief. But actually do the multi-trillion dollar rebuilding project he campaigned on -- even without the Senate.
In the interview, I say there is no real excuse for NOT doing this. And I hope he does it. But of course, if he doesn't do it, he and Democrats will need to be pressured. But I do believe it's better to come from a place of providing solutions first and removing all the excuses.
It is common to do interviews where you have no idea what the final headline or angle will be. I was led to believe this was going to be a story about 'What Biden Can do Without the Senate,' not the 'Left's' political strategy. That's why I talk little about political strategy.
But substantive policy doesn't make good headlines. So headlines tend to use the common tropes of 'left vs. center' and political framing that try to turn actual ideas and solutions into tribal warfare.
I believe that the main enemy we have (and by we, I don't mean the left, I mean the American people who are going hungry and losing their jobs) is inaction that comes from fear of failure. I say this in the interview. And they cut this, but I called for a coalition of the doing.
Real leadership is going to be the willingness to act right now despite the potential risks of failure. There is no excuse for inaction. And I do, genuinely, hope Democrats see that. And if they don't, then I genuinely hope we will see as much pressure on them as we saw on Trump.
If your problem with this interview is in the actual substance of what I said, I would love to hear it by the way. I do think we are saying something a bit new at New Consensus, and we want to hear substantive critique of those ideas.
And finally, a few people have mentioned that they think I'm too optimistic. And you know what--I am. Why would you be in politics if you don't have some hope for the future? To me, optimism is hoping for the best and planning for the worst.
So I encourage Dem leaders to act. I hope they will act and I will continue providing solutions for how they can act. If they do, I will be the first to cheer them on. And if they don't, I will be the first to point it out and support primary challenges against them.
