Despite running an anti-ukip account for a couple of years when the referendum was announced I felt I had to go and research the EU to confirm I supported it.

I didn't really know that much about it, just took it for granted really.

1/
When I found myself on the same team as David Cameron and Big Business, I thought it might be a trap, so I read about the EU, studied the various agreements we'd signed, looked into our rebate and veto and then visited Brussels.

2/
I chatted to European and British friends to get their thoughts, then I looked into the history of why it was set up, why it took so long for the UK to join, why we did join in the end and how it had been the bedrock of a plan to stop wars in Europe.

3/
In the end I felt that despite being on Team Cameron, on balance, the EU was a good thing, with flaws and that we were considerably better off IN than OUT.

4/
I say all this because I'm not sure everyone who voted in 2016 did the same research, and I believe a lot of people just picked a rhetoric they felt fitted with their view of the UK and plumped for it.

Since then we've polarised into two tribes
Willing to fight over our 'principles'

And now it looks like those that plumped for Brexit are facing a reality that at best falls short of the rhetoric and at worst proves they were just lied to.

5/
Because of the nature of the tribal warfare that's gone on they can't now openly question their choice or criticise those who promised them unicorns.

6/
Remain voters are now facing an outcome they increasingly feared and are torn between the joy of being proved right and the realisation that they won't escape the consequences of Brexit either.

7/
I bet you wish the last tweet in this thread offered some hope or a solution. It doesn't.

It feels like we are going to face Brexit like we did Covid.

Incompetent leadership, divided public (mask or no mask) and social and economic problems that'll cost lives
