There was a petition put forward in the @NL_HOA yesterday ( @PCPartyNL) for the @GovNL to outright reject a proposed Protected Areas Plan #AHomeForNature for the Island of Newfoundland due to lack of public consultation (1200 signatures).
A protected areas plan #AHomeForNaure for Newfoundland and Labrador is the legislated responsibility and commitment of our @GovNL and its cabinet. It is an important and challenging responsibility!
I (and the @nl_WERAC Council members) recognize the need for further consultation. This is planned in phase two of the process. I ask that our @GovNL representatives respect the process that took place through Engage NL https://www.engagenl.ca/.../home-nature-protected-areas.
The boundaries in the proposed plan are not final. Information and local knowledge are being gathered to modify these boundaries through this formal process
A petition of 1200 does not supersede the hard-earned and detailed feedback that was provided by residents and non governmental organizations of this province. It is important that @GovNL not backtrack.
Wait until the feedback received in Phase 1 can be organized and incorporated into a What We Heard report before postulating what the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador contributed. #SupportThePlan #AHomeForNature @nl_WERAC @DerrickBragg
