Five years ago today I was locked in negotiations… the #ParisAgreement on climate change was on a knife edge. We made it and yes, let's celebrate its 5th birthday - but let us also reflect on the challenges ahead as we tackle the #climatecrisis as a global community 1/8
The @UNEP #EmissionGap report is clear: despite the 4-7% decrease in CO2 emissions this year due to #COVID19 we are heading for a temperature rise in excess of 3°C this century 2/8

Today’s new report @gcarbonproject underlines the urgency further: there’s around 8% of the carbon budget left - that means we have less than ten years at current emissions rates, if we want to limit global temperature rise to 1.5C. 3/8

We all like to think we are leaders. But none of the main polluters are doing enough to prevent dangerous warming, as the 2021 edition of the Climate Change Performance Index makes clear #CCPI2021 @Germanwatch 4/8 https://ccpi.org
Still, let's also recognise progress:
#climate is back on top of the US agenda
EU is taking the lead with its Green Deal
The UK has a strong new target #COP26
China Japan South Korea are now aiming for #CarbonNeutrality
Developing country climate plans are accelerating! 5/8
Let us recognise the ultimate goal: This is net-zero and the economy is shifting: according to @SYSTEMIQ_Ltd low-carbon solutions are expected to become competitive in sectors accounting for nearly three quarters of emissions by 2030. #ParisEffect 6/8

Last but not least, citizens across the world think the fight against climate change must be part of the economic recovery, including China (73%), Hungary (71%), Spain (64%) , Germany (63%) and France (61%) 7/8

So the good news here: The #ParisAgreement, as our global road map for decarbonization of the economy is working! We have now to go faster and further but we can do it together #COP26 8/8
