So, I’ve been reading the new Brexit rules when it comes to acquiring work permits for foreign players.

It’s quite complicated

I’ve taken a look at some recent Blues transfers and seen whether Brexit would have affected them or not. #bcfc
Worth saying that this may not be 100% accurate, but pretty close.

You need 15 points to qualify for a WP. The 6 categories are:

Int. apps.
Minutes played in league
Minutes played in continental cup
Their clubs league position
Progress in cont. cup
Quality of league
🚨 points are only awarded for the past 12 months.

For example, Mikel San Jose has played for Spain seven times, but his last appearance for them came in 2016, so he would not be awarded any extra points.

Also, clubs can appeal if players fall just short of 15 points.
Mikel San Jose 🇪🇸

19/20 season interrupted by injuries so you’d have to go back to 18/19.

11 points - 33/38 games for Bilbao (87%) in a ‘band 1’ league

1 - midtable finish in La Liga

12 - La Liga is a ‘band 1’ league

MSJ reaches 24 points and gets a WP easily.
Andres Prieto 🇪🇸

0 minutes in La Liga last season

3/8 Europa League games (37.5%), no points for that.

Espanyol were relegated - no points.

3 points - Espanyol reached R32 of Europa League

12 points - La Liga is a ‘band 1’ league.

He just about reaches 15 points
Jeremie Bela 🇪🇸/🇦🇴

He’s been called up for Angola, but I’m not sure if he’s played and they have a very low world ranking anyway.

4 points - 34/44 games for Albacete in La Liga 2

Lost in play offs. No points.

6 points - La Liga 2 is ‘band 4’

He only reaches 10 points
Ivan Sunjic 🇭🇷

Made his only Croatia app. in 2017.

3 points - played 24/36 games for Din. Zagreb in Croatian league.

4 points - 8/10 games in Europa League

3 points - won the league

4 points - reached Europa R16

6 points - ‘band 4’ league

20 points so acquires WP
Ivan Sanchez 🇪🇸

5 points - 37/45 games in La Liga 2 (82%)

1 point - Elche were promoted through the play offs

6 points - La Liga is a ‘band 4’ league

He only reaches 12 points. It would potentially be appealable as it’s only 3 points off the required number
Alen Halilovic 🇭🇷

Last played for Croatia in 2019, no points.

7 points - 17/25 games for Heerenveen in truncated season (65% of games)

10 points - Eredivisie is a ‘band 2’ league.

He reaches 17 points thanks to playing in a good league last season
Those are just a few examples.

What I’ve gathered from all this is that Blues will be fine signing players from ‘higher reputation’ clubs or leagues (Sunjic, San Jose etc.)

But signing players like Ivan Sanchez, from more obscure leagues, is going to be tricky.
There is also a complete ban on signing foreign players who are u18, although I suspect that won’t affect Blues too much. Be interesting to see how Brexit does change transfer activity across the country. #bcfc
