If you don't have money, time or consoles to play those you are interested in fully before nominations time, I would recommend watch some play-throughs online (there are millions on YT alone) and supplement with reviews on playability.
Not the perfect solution but I would say no worse than judging on an extract in the packet, as is sometimes done.
