i think transhistorical analysis is important, and contemporary culture is worth study. but the cultural positions of, eg, The Avengers vs. The Knights of the Round Table are distinct, and the relations people were and are allowed to have with them are massively different!
fanfic is deeply important for how we relate to media right now, and as a practice it can provide ways of rethinking historical audience reception and response. but the language of "fanfic" by itself installs a division of production unique to contemporary consumer capitalism!
I'm saying all this in anticipation of the first tweet getting big enough to start getting annoying replies, but I know the people making those replies won't read the thread. i already said goodnight what more do you want
