What a shameful thread this is. The EU has always been clear that negotiations happen through Barnier and that they are speaking as one voice. But instead of finally recognising that mandate, we instead get yet more anti-German rhetoric. I'm tired of it. It is pathetic and sad. https://twitter.com/imranahmadkhan/status/1337387171460812800
And did it ever occur to those who continue to dispense it that it is part of the problem? That maybe Germany has had enough of it? Enough of Tory MPs insulting Germany again and again? Enough of how EU citizens at home here in the UK have been treated? Enough of all the lies?
And to attest a lack of respect really takes the biscuit. What respect has the UK shown? Do you think telling EU citizens a year ago that this isn't our home is respect? Or that front page after front page like this speaking of "EU dirty rats" is respect? https://twitter.com/cliodiaspora/status/1043028341060599810?s=20
Or that any of this is respect? https://twitter.com/cliodiaspora/status/1088829150989819904?s=20
What is happening now is the logical consequence of the UK Govt's appalling behaviour. Jingoism, bullying and lies sadly did work here, but they don't in a community of nations where agreements were made. Any good will was gambled away with insult after insult, lie after lie.
Yet more excpetionalism; yet more anti-German rhetoric, won't change that, it'll only make it worse. What has happend to the UK and how vast numbers of elected representatives are behaving is truly pathetic, but as I said at the outset, it is also really just sad. /end
PS: Yes, of course it’s anti-German even if not bluntly so. The express references made are designed to play to a particular audience here in the UK and invoke certain sentiments. The fact that it’s not quite as “in your face” as some other examples doesn’t make it any better.
