Understanding the gravity of the feats of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the modern era-A thread.
We'll begin with the goals. In the modern era, in top 5 leagues, if one scores 30 goals a szn for 20 years(say 18-38), he'll have 600 goals. Ronaldo has 747 and Messi has 712. (Removing Cristiano's goals in Sporting colours)
Young players bagging a goal a game for successive games are hailed, rightfully tho. But remember Cristiano Ronaldo has 450 goals for Real Madrid in 438 games. 9 years of doing it... Best goal to game ratio for a club among top 5 leagues.
There are 52 weeks a year and allowing a few mid-week fixtures, say 70, even if you score in each one of them, you'll end up with 70 goals. Messi has set a record of 91 official goals in 2012, in 69 games.
UCL is the supreme platform of club football. The max games a player can feature in a UCL szn is 13. 10 goals in it is by itself crazy, given how tough the competition is. Ronaldo did it for 7 straight szns, holding record of 1st(17), 2nd(15) and 3rd(14) highest tally by himself.
Lionel Messi holds the record for most successive games scored in (21). He scored 33 goals in this time period. Finding the back of the net 21 successive games...
At the age of 27, Cristiano Ronaldo had 322 career goals with only 31 of them in the Champions League.
Since then, he scored 430 goals with 103 of them coming in the Champions League. Most in that span and 2nd only to Zlatan who is 2 years older. No context needed, crazy already.
Messi now has 1012 goal contributions in 887 games. It's like appearing on the goal contribution chart at least once a game throughout the career.
Only 4 players have maintained a goal ratio of >1 throughout a calendar year in the top 5 leagues. Messi, Kane and Lewandowski has done it once each, while Cristiano has done it 4 times and has a chance to do it in 2020 as well. Effectively, like scoring each game for 4 years...
Lionel Messi has scored braces in 10 consecutive games in 2012. I should'nt be even putting any context, it's already crazy.
A player inspiring a comeback in big games might be a highlight of his career. Cristiano Ronaldo has done this against Wolfsburg (2016), Atletico (2019) and Spain(2018). All in CL and WC. Not only did he score the decisive ones, but all the 3 goals for his side.. Inhumane.(1/2)
This is not even considering his perfomances with Sweden etc.
One of the craziest thing about Messi is him being the top assist provider as well in football history. Yes, assists are not outright measurement of playmaking but doing both simultaneously isn't everyday business.
This isn't repeating. And amazingly we had both of them in the same era. Finally, as they say, appreciate them while it lasts. These aren't even 10% of the records they hold.
