Tomorrow (Dec 12th) marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Uhuru satellite. Uhuru was the 1st satellite dedicated to observing cosmic X-ray sources (that is, not the Sun).
The name "Uhuru" (Swahili for "freedom") because of its launch site in Kenya. Uhuru was followed by other X-ray missions like Einstein in 1978 and ROSAT in 1990 and, of course, @chandraxray & @ESA_XMM in 1999.
If Uhuru represents X-ray astronomy's past, then @lynxobservatory is its future. This proposed mission is part of the next Decadal Survey, which will prioritize NASA's next major missions following JWST and WFIRST. https://www.lynxobservatory.com/
A brief history of X-ray astronomy, compiled by Wallace Tucker, is available at https://chandra.harvard.edu/chronicle/0202/40years/index.html
