You know, there was a period of time where people would flip out and cry "clickbait!" over practically any headline that did not give the entire story. And I think that's something we should have taken way more seriously than we did.
I'm not talking "And You Won't Believe What Happened Next!" clickbait, I'm talking people thinking that not giving them the entire story in a headline was somehow a way of manipulating them into being forced to read the whole story.
I think there were a significant amount of people who just wanted to get their news from headlines only, and that a whole lot of nefarious actors sort of took advantage of that.
Like a lot of the misinformation that gets passed around comes not from people actually going to websites and reading actual articles, it comes from them reading just the headline on social media and not even bothering to consider the source.
