So much of our anxiety is wrapped up in only being able to imagine one future for ourselves. Lately I’m experimenting with finding peace & acceptance in multiple contingent potentials: Partner/single, children/none, career stability/pivot, etc.—& challenging these ‘binaries’ too!
This is mindfulness. You need to be firmly rooted in the present to accept the future as uncertain. This isn’t about relinquishing one’s agency, but becoming flexible—adaptive & resilient—when we may be ripping at the centre, pulled between the ‘certainties’ of the past & future.
This has macro implications i.e. on collective imagination. Our ‘poverty of imagination’ has less to do with an inability to imagine futures but more with a lack of awareness of the need to create the right condition for that, which is—ironically—better relating to the present
