"do your own research" part II
the problems with telling people to do their own research online and providing no sources/evidence/analysis/reasonings.
This person probably isn't the first to get the image, probably got it from someone else, but certainly didn't get it from any article. https://archive.is/07Qeo
Fact-Checkers actually do their own research. In droves, when creating counter claims, here are two examples against Bill Gates claims made earlier this year. Note: references are included, always https://archive.is/00LMH , https://archive.is/j2eev
For anyone to suggest you do yours by watching a YouTube video, or by following your heart/not listening to experts who are working collaboratively after years of research, is quite insane.
This article: https://archive.is/jzfTq  (image attached), features in SciAm, https://archive.is/7XOol . [The SciAm piece] also contains many other references to other studies done on outbreaks and how they are controlled. It is known how viral outbreaks happen...
... it is known how to prevent transmission, and it is known that misinformation is a big issue, and we can grow too fearful of the wrong thing.
In coutries, now, where we don't have the rapid spread of misinformation and distrust in science and NPI, there are celebrations and freedoms. https://archive.is/OakrT
There's just one point I really wanted to go over in a second part to this thread: https://twitter.com/beandiagram/status/1335349561666244614
"it depends", and critical thinking: https://archive.is/btklV
First, it's important to know how respiratory viruses are transmitted: https://archive.is/rPfzG . Second, it's important to know that not everyone is locked down: https://archive.is/qlnG0 , third, it's important to know that not everyone complied either: https://archive.is/v8np5  ...
... (that's just one example of not complying, you can "do your own research" to find more.)
So, the lockdown works by reducing the ability for the virus to be able to infect another person. That's it. We get compliance, we get it early, we get it down. We set up an effective test and trace system, and we encourage public use of NPI and we're OK https://threader.app/thread/1325934777220870144 -
But, it's also easy for me to tell you "masks work", you also might have an image showing me that mask mandates went in and cases still rose, maybe even faster.
1) mandate likely went in as other restrictions eased
2) mandate likely wasn't -everywhere-
...
3) compliance is still an issue
4) no measure is 100% effective
5) there are ways that masks can make things worse, you must use them correctly.
