In the event of #nodeal the U.K. Government should subsidise those industries hit by tariffs. And keep tariffs low or null on key E.U. imports. Then invest heavily on U.K. industry (well above #EU spending limits allow) and seek to stimulate internal demand.
I would resist the urge to rush into signing free trade agreements with other nations. Relying on a combination of tariffs and subsidies instead to protect and nurture U.K. industry. We live in an age where the weaknesses of the Free Trade era are evident. It’s time for Security.
The free trade era aimed to create a world were transnational agreements, which are often heavily laden with Corporate Rights, could restrict any national governments mandate, and pushed back on democracy, in the interest of “efficiency” and growth.
But the measures they’ve used to asses it’s success are flawed, It has resulted in a rise of inequality, in the destruction of communities and the environment. It has also made people feel powerless to conduct their economies according to their priorities.
I believe this to be the underlying sentiment behind #Brexit. Which politicians have tried to exploit to fuel their (nationalist) agendas. The Right was first to recognise it and first to benefit from it. But the Left would be wrong to disregard it merely as a tantrum.
