[thread][ #pushbacks/ #lesvos/ #lesbos/ #refugeesgr][1] Today we publish an introduction to our investigation on footage circulated by the Ministry of Migration in Grece, w.
@EFSYNTAKTON (article in Greek, see below for EN version) > https://twitter.com/EFSYNTAKTON/status/1337310609185124353
[2] Short clips, recorded with a mobile phone, were used by the Greek minister of Migration, Notis Mitarakis, on a press conference. The edited clips show asylum seekers speaking about how they were told to contact monitoring ngos in order to receive help upon reaching Greece. >
[3] Questions are subsequently raised as to how and why these videos were filmed, and how would the Ministry or the #lesvos Port Authority justify their publication which we want to highlight here, is not a leak but an official procedure. >
[4] Lawyers and legal practitioners with a long-term experience on issues related to refugees describe to @EFSYNTAKTON that the state authorities have the obligation to maintain confidentiality during each stage of the asylum process. >
[5] A filmed interview is not part of any of the asylum proceedings. This is particularly true during the preliminary investigation that is conducted by the police or the port authority regarding their irregular entry to Greece. >
[6] Analyzing the footage one can find common elements between one of the clips and other imagery that the local Port Police authorities have published on their social media. Identifying features include but are not limited to the walls, the floor of the room and the furniture. >
[7a] The rest of the clips were filmed inside an isobox container that is used as an office. Common features between the clips include items such as the flooring, the isobox walls, a trashcan and a desk. Based on the items in the desk (pairs of sunglasses and coffees) >
[7b] ... we know that there were at least two individuals present conducting the interview, and we assume that one of them is the interpreter that the interviewees face, and the other one being the individual that recorded the interviews with their mobile phone. >
[8] We weren't able to identify where exactly this isobox is located, yet we have to note that published footage and satellite imagery provide evidence of isoboxes being installed on within the port of Mytilini in #lesvos in close proximity to the building of the Port Authority.>
[9a] An important note here: The pictures we used to identify the spaces where the recordings took place, are all published by the port authorities in Mytilini/ #Lesvos as part of previous -non relevant- cases. >
[9b] We also covered the faces and bodies of asylum seekers and we shall not be sharing again the footage that the ministry published. >
[10] Minister Mitarakis was quick to reply on Twitter for this, speaking of "lonely commenting". It is therefore important to clarify once more that misconduct from the side of the Turkish Coast Guard or other Turkish authorities does not justify these publications. >
