How the show Gossip Girl normalised Sexual Assault as just being a “bad character trait” : A thread.
In the very first episode, Chuck assaults Serena after she says no multiple times - She begins yelling and he keeps kissing / touching her all over her body. The ONLY way he stops was Serena kicking him in the balls and running away. This was sexual assault.
In the same episode, Chuck sexually assaults Jenny (WHO IS 14 YEARS OLD IN THIS SEASON$!!). He offers her a drink and then forces himself on her while she screams for him to stop. Dan and Serena find them eventually and Dan punches him. And that’s all.
Now here’s my issue. Not once did we see anyone ask if either girl want to press chargers against chuck for sexual assault. It WAS sexual assault, but because it was a “friend” / “a wealthy friend” - these two sexual assaults are completely excused as Chucks “personality”
Gossip Girl literally taught millions of teenage girls that if you get sexually assaulted by a good friend or someone with “popularity” then you don’t have the option to press charges. Assault is assault. You are always free to press charges if you feel you can
