Protecting children from the harms of paediatric transitioning is above bipartisan politics, religion, and every other distinction in political belief. If the outcome of Keira Bell’s case was just—and I firmly believe it was—does it matter who enabled it to be reached?
The high court confirmed that the decision left the principle of Gillick competency untouched. Teenage girls can still get contraceptives. Bell’s case was limited to whether children can give informed consent to sterilising procedures with other lifelong health impacts.
So why on earth is a peer in the Lords amplifying the outright conspiracy theory that the Bell judgment is a stealthy way to undermine women’s reproductive rights? Desperation? Malice? Blind belief? Misogyny?
