Now to the hologram part. To ensure that they maintain the image of being a Super Rich club they've even got a survey published that they have 1.1 Bn fans and followers. Most media agencies and fans have shortened it to 1.1 Bn fans. That's a ludicrous number to start with
Because, lets face it they don't have such a big following. They aren't even the most followed European football team on social media. But when you look at their survey itself it throws up something very interesting. The study was conducted by the Kantar Group.
The Kantar Group polled more than 50,000 people from 39 countries to arrive at this number of 1.1 Bn..up by about 400 Mn since 2012. Kantar estimates that Manchester United has 467 Mn Fans and 635 Mn Followers. Now keep that second figure in mind. Because what you read next is going to knock you out.
When you look closely at their US SEC Filings, the truth comes out. They've considered anyone who has watched a live Manchester United match or followed highlights or read or talked about Manchester United as a follower. So if you watch the Derby tomorrow, you're a follower.
