A missionaries’ journey to India

Introduction

Ever since the late sixteenth century, by which time the British had well established their rule in India, xistian missionaries and evangelists have worked very diligently to convert the Hindus and spread xistianity in India.
Even after independence they were carrying out large scale conversion activities in India especially among the tribal and the marginalized sections of the society.
Their work was so intense that governments of various Indian states started getting concerned and thus passing various laws to try and curb this phenomenon.

In 1967 Odisha passed the Freedom of Religion Act against forced conversions.
In 1968 Madhya Pradesh passed their Freedom of Religion Act against forced conversions.
In Arunachal Pradesh, xistians are the most dominant, comprising of 30% of its population.
Despite bringing in a law against conversion in the year 1978, the xristian missionaries’ work could not be curtailed.

Tamil Nadu introduced the Prohibition of Forcible conversion of Religion Act in 2002.
In Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka the missionaries are very active.

Their success can be gauged from the fact that the current Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy is a xistian convert.
Jharkhand, where almost 27% of the population is tribal, passed a similar Freedom of Religion Act in 2017.

Although in the Hindi heartland i.e. the northern states of India, we mostly hear about Mzlim aggression,
more particularly so in the current times with Love Jehad being diligently used by the Mzlims to convert the Hindus, we must not be oblivious to the fact that the xistians too are carrying out missionary and evangelical activities but with a different approach.
In order to understand what makes the evangelists so successful in carrying out proselytizing activities we will discuss about a fascinating book called ‘Among India’s Students’ by Robert P. Wilder,
an American missionary who had travelled to India during the late nineteenth century.

After spending large amounts of time in India carrying out missionary activities,
he went back and wrote this book which is a comprehensive guide to the learnings from his stay in India, and lists out effective methods of preaching for his fellow missionaries going to India.
