diversity and representation isn't just 2 PoC in the cast... it's the writers, the make up artists, hair stylists, directors, extras, lighting etc... it's about collective progress and cultural influence on the film/show/set. Cause most times, it's just tokenistic
like, we really deserve to design our worlds our way, film it our way, tell the stories our way... not just a sprinkle of melanin in the cast (and mind you, it's always someone lightskin)
it's about addressing whiteness and colonialism in this industry and looking at who's land you're on and how storytelling is as easy as breathing for many BIPOC. We deserve the time, space and FUNDING to make our stories.
Also, this includes those who are disabled, queer and fat! We deserve to see ourselves on screen. PoC deserve to see layers of their identity.
Like have you ever watched a show/film that had only a few PoC and you still felt like it was for white audiences? It's because it's written by white writers. Usually cis, abled bodied and het too.
I didn’t realise this would get traction but lemme talk about white writers writing PoC... the reason why this always bothers me is because they always write characters that respond to their environment differently to how PoC would actually respond. Like look at the dialogue
The movement, the gestures, the inside jokes, the family dynamic... all these things are inauthentic because they’re written by white folks who write their assumptions of how these things work, whereas PoC know how we work.
So when looking at queerness and disability in film and media, when you don’t have queer writers or disabled writers, it’s usually people writing their assumptions of how these people move around in the world. This isn’t realistic or authentic
But also, we really need to address the fact it isn’t our fault the industry is like this. It’s rooted in whiteness. It’s rooted in anti-Blackness and Indigenous genocide. It’s bigger than it seems, because it’s a product of colonisation. There are layers to this.
Like think of old films. Look at how they depicted PoC... usually it was Brownface, Blackface or yellow face being done by White actors... It’s rooted in its history. Hollywood needs to address the fact that it’s racist & depends on whiteness... like look at the PoC who do speak
Out about the industry and how much flack they receive. It’s systemic. And it needs to be destroyed
