Modern ascension in social settings.
— Thread.
I was listening to one of Tim Ferriss's podcast, with Naval as guest.
From there I heard about this cool blog, Melting Asphalt, and I decided to check it out.
First article I read was pretty cool so I'm going to share some ideas from it with you guys.

There are only two ways to the top:
1. Dominance
2. Prestige
The two are NOT mutually exclusive.
You can have both in one leader.

Dominance means subduing by force. Then ascending.
Prestige means ascending via the will of the people (or so it seems).
With Prestige, you somehow make the low status individual WANT to follow you.
With dominance, you force them to.

Ascending via Dominance focuses on the leader's behavior.
Ascending via Prestige focuses on the followers' behavior.
Those who ascend via Dominance can build Prestige.
Those who ascend via Prestige usually cannot as this makes the basis of their ascension to collapse.

The benefits of Dominance are taken forcefully, but those of Prestige are given freely by the low status individual (followers).
Where ascension via Dominance is not possible, the wannabe leader usually defers to Prestige.
Prestige is the widely preferred option, because not all can ascend via Dominance.
Prestige is the widely preferred option, because not all can ascend via Dominance.
There are also reasons why Prestige is the more preferable option:
— with Dominance, the leader is constantly under fear of attack from his subdued subordinates.
— with Prestige, the leader usually doesn't have to worry about such.

Dominance employs fear.
Prestige employs admiration.
Prestige employs admiration.
For Prestige, the low status individual admires the high status individual for some skill, or characteristic they consider outstanding or impressive.
In some cases, the admirer may be superior (in skill) to whom he's admiring.

Magnus Carlsen is world chess champion.
That doesn't stop him admiring the feat of some Grand Masters, even though he's superior to them.

***My thoughts...
Prestige is a smarter way of ascending in the modern age.
Except you're a boxer, MMA fighter, or dealing with girls.
But then again, I mentioned social.

This thread is a very brief recap. It doesn't do this justice.
