Just spitballing here, but we could also just, you know, let people be excited about things in a year that has been a nightmare instead of snidely putting them down as being lowbrow knuckle-draggers destroying cinema. https://twitter.com/SeanMBurns/status/1337208822599979009
You can be concerned about the direction in which filmmaking is heading and *still be excited* about projects that were announced today. I certainly am. They're not mutually exclusive things and it's odd that people are treating them as though they are.
It's worth noting this is coming mainly from white dudes who believe that the New Hollywood era of the 70s dominated by other white dudes is the peak of cinema, wholly dismissing the women & POC excited about the announcements today because of the diversity they showed.
It's easy to poo-poo them when you're a white guy who's literally never not seen yourself represented in front of or behind the camera, any genre, any budget. The rest of us? We're stoked to see dark-skinned actresses repped, to see a woman FINALLY get a Star Wars movie, more.
Because we HAVEN'T seen ourselves in film our entire lives so we don't take it for granted. Go watch indie movies. That's fine! Plenty of indie movies are great! Let the rest of us have our "soulless" superhero blockbusters & space movies for once & leave us the hell alone, damn.
