The thread you didn’t ask for: Black [American] Religious Music is VAST AF...
So BOOM...let’s start with Chicago. Home of Gospel. Usually, quite “churchy” sounding. Roberta Martin helped nurture this sound [sis was classically trained] notice close harmonies and very traditional/Baptist sound.
Detroit sounds a tad different. They are NOT afraid to experiment with different[worldy] sounds. Mattie Moss-Clark helped with that. She’s a genius, developed the 3-part harmony in choirs, and she’s the mother of the Clark Sisters. PERIOD.
NYC is hard for me to distinguish. They seem to be big on choirs and music that’ll get the saints dancing [in all forms]. 10/10
Methodist Prayer bands of the Maryland and Delaware area. Think of a ring shout with less “shout” and more “ring”.
🗣PHILLY!! Philly helped bring the Holiness sound to gospel. Hard Gospel” (singers, in particular, female singers doing a lot of hollering and what not). Came out of the Holiness Churches. Think The Davis Sisters, Clara Ward, Angelic Gospel Singers, etc.
The Carolinas are gonna give you “Hymn Choirs”....it’s exactly what it sounds like. No music. Seen in Baptist and Methodist churches. Dying tradition.
The Gullah region of coastal SC and parts of GA. Home of the ring shout. You can hear a very African sound.
Primitive Baptists of GA and FL. Traditionally, they didn’t use instruments (as you can hear), but many do now. Old School church. They often March in a counter-clockwise circle when singing
Shouting [music] from the Church of God in Christ. Enough said.
Easter Rock of Louisiana. Ritual practiced the night before Easter and often run/ran until Easter morning. They do NOT believe in crossing your feet while “rocking” (considered to be dancing=sin). Everything you see is symbolic of something. Another thread for another day.
United House of Prayer for All People. Known for their brass bands and mass fire hose outdoor baptisms.
Church of the Living God, Jewell Dominion. Use the steel guitar instead of an organ.
Church of the Living God, Keith Dominion. Came from Jewell Dominion. Only difference is their music is a bit faster and more “rock” sounding.
Church of God and Saints of Christ. Jewish-Christian denomination. Believe in strict [almost militant] order. Sing like MF’ing canaries with their harmonies and what not.
West Coast gospel gives contemporary vibes. Think Andrae Crouch, The Hawkins Family (Tramaine, Edwin, Walter), and Daryl Coley.
Hymn-lining from the Baptist church. Other traditions/denominations line hymns...many line them differently. This is just about the Baptists.
Alladis barely scratches the surface. But, put 👏🏾some 👏🏾respect 👏🏾on 👏🏾Gospel👏🏾 Music’s 👏🏾black 👏🏾ass👏🏾name👏🏾. Thank you for attending my TedTalk☺️
