I spoke to a good friend of mine yesterday, who is a doctor at Stillwater Medical. He spends all of his time these days treating hospitalized COVID patients, and a big part of that time is devoted to talking to the families of patients who have died or are dying. (thread...)
He and his colleagues have been operating at capacity for months now. They are exhausted and frustrated, but more than that, they are terribly sad. They are fighting all day, every day to save the lives of the people in their care, but COVID is winning too many of those battles.
I cannot image the strength and courage it takes for my friend, after spending days or weeks using all the tools of his training and experience to treat a patient, to have to go explain to the patient's children that he wasn't able to save their mom or dad.
We talked about how to find a message that might help our community understand the gravity of the current situation. I told him that I'm struggling to know the words to say or the actions to take that might keep him from having to have that conversation with another family.
His response was chilling: "I am 100% effective at explaining to people how serious COVID is," he said, "but by the time I'm talking to them, it's too late."

Please. Do your part to prevent the spread. Protect the lives of your neighbors and give our healthcare workers a chance
Wear your mask. Avoid crowded areas. Do not put yourself or others in situations that risk the transmission of disease. We all know the recommendations, but we must be willing to make the sacrifices necessary to stop this disease.
