#Brereton 1: #ausdef Minister & CDF pursuit of necessary professionalism & culture-change reforms in ADF's Special Forces is facing much unfair, factually incorrect & emotive criticism. Incl fm those in-denial re war crimes or pushing distractions for unrelated #auspol purposes.
#Brereton 2: Critics who have not actually read (or understood whole) Brereton Report shld shut up until they have. Same applies for those who ignore legal, protocol & personal distinctions btw a (collective) unit citation (a badge) & an actual medal won by individuals. #auspol
#Brereton 3: Australia's chief interest is to ensure that war crimes, esp systemic ones, are never committed again by #ADF personnel. This requires major culture change in #SASR. Incl Brereton recommendation that those in-denial abt war crimes have no place in our defence force.
#Brereton 4: Much criticism of necessary reforms stemming fm Brereton Inquiry misses that the presumption of innocence, & whether individuals can/will be convicted or not, is a separate issue to whether the war crimes occurred & what's necessary to prevent a recurrence. #auspol
#Brereton 5: ADA notes current Minister for Defence & CDF are doing a hard job well in tackling necessary reform issues. Despite much emotive & uninformed public confusion/furore caused by inaccurate/biased media reporting & distractions pushed by other interests. #ausdef #auspol
#Brereton 6: Political interference in CDF's statutory & professional command of the ADF needs to stop. Ministerial continuity in #ausdef portfolio also even more vital than normal at this time. Australia as a whole must face up to these war crimes, not scapegoat those who are.
