This bloke started out as a teacher in the Territory. Warren ‘Snowy’ ‘Wazza’ Snowdon. In 1987 Wazza took on the seat of the Northern Territory for the Australian Labor Party. A time when the struggle for Aboriginal land rights was such a major battle @manwiththemo
Relationships between the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal leadership was combative and almost impossible to break through. Hatred, bigotry, racism and indescribable remote distances of travel, was the world you stepped up to take on.
I was just a high school student when I first met you and in some ways you have continued your teaching ways to those of us who have had the opportunity to work beside you.
It was a moment in history to listen to your speech in the House of Representatives yesterday as you spoke of your time as one of the longest serving politicians I have known, and of ‘rolling up the swag’ on your political journey.
Waz your solid determination to blaze a better path for Territorians and for First Nations people across Australia is outstanding. I am one of so many who has been inspired by you, learnt from you, argued with you, challenged ideas together
and walked beside you in particular with our First Nations’ Caucus Committee colleagues (FNCC). But there’s more work to do between now and the next Federal election. So don’t roll that swag up just yet 👍🏾
Thankyou and Elizabeth and your children, Jack, Frankie, Tom and Tess, for all you do for the Labor party and labour movement, for Territorians and for all Australians. Thanks to your incredible staff who assist NT and Federal Labor on everything Territory.
