Sometimes when I read tweets about peer review it makes me think there's basically a social choice problem where everyone thinks their papers are good and other people's papers are bad.
I also sometimes see people say X is a bad reason to reject a paper, but if all papers where a reviewer said X were accepted instead of rejected journal issues would be 10,000 pages long.
I also get the sense some people think a well-designed study on any topic merits publication at prestigious journals and I think a lot of the debates about whether something is "interesting" or "surprising" are actually people with differing views on that question.
