We’ll never eliminate homelessness w/o permanent investment in safe, decent public housing & w/o actively removing the stigma that currently surrounds it. Job creation is not a solution to lack of housing & healthcare access, especially when jobs aren’t paying living wages. 1/
Minimum wages don’t cover the rent & the loss of a job means the loss of healthcare for many people. Housing & healthcare have to exist as universal guarantees along with living wages—at bare minimum. 2/
What we’re witnessing now is what happens when you don’t have these things & instead allow neoliberal policies to govern the country for 40 years. Wealth inequality is exploding, the economy is crashing & the overall public health is declining. We have to change direction. 3/
(We also need things like community land trusts & tenant-owned properties) but my point is that the government has to be committed, through funding & policy, to ensuring that no one is without their most basic needs. That has to be the responsibility of any advanced govt. 4/4
