IFS works way better when I try to figure it out on my own. When I try Shwartz's formulas/instructions my parts get super defensive and shut down

I like it more this way, feels like play

I get to use the softer hemisphere and the pace + direction is determined by intuition
its so in line with meditative insight, too! the two practices can start to blend

having trouble piercing 'The Self' with the arrow of insight? Try 'A Self'!
there are these beautiful moments when for example, an exiled part will be released of the emotion its never been allowed to feel, in the embrace of the central self. when they touch, it can be hard at times to tell/see them apart, and thats ok- really ok
https://dharmaseed.org/talks/audio_player/210/868.html about halfway thru this talk, burbea describes some impromptu ifs + meditation style stuff with his fear-as-a-part in a really beautiful way.
lately ive found the car metaphor helpful: theres someone in the drivers seat, and someone in the passenger seat as well. maybe a backseat driver or two, or three. many of us have someone hogtied in the trunk. pulling over occasionally and playing musical chairs is fun & healthy
some parts have quick reflexes but poor map reading skills. some get confused between the rearview mirror and the front windshield. some are great at spotting obstacles and bad at finding shortcuts. it takes everyone working together to get where u want to go
i have a part that only knows how to floor it, and a part that's been screaming for the brakes for a decade. just beginning to make peace between them has *vastly* improved the quality of my road trip
some drugs can essentially provide each part, especially the ones in the trunk and backseats, with a megaphone. this is a good thing, when employed skillfully (tho it can be loud)
id love to see a model of IFS that is informed by neuroscience- i wonder what could be accomplished if we could map out certain parts with areas of the brain...?
listening to parts > ignoring parts

it can be such a shift to interpret their somatic manifestations as attempts to help you, instead of viewing your body as broken https://twitter.com/Aryeh___/status/1272010350058070017
getting a sense that over literalization can become a real issue with these 'parts' metaphors, which is another reason to bring in some meditative insight into play. helps to recognize that 'parts' are as empty and subject to change as anything else

a clarification to the first tweet in this thread: 'on my own' doesn't necessarily mean alone, in fact some of the most effective ifs work ive done has been in the presence of another. what im pointing at is a movement away from overlying on method/procedure from books, etc
sometimes its necessary/helpful to 'borrow' Self from a friend or professional, and that's completely ok
