My symbolism loving brain is working at 200% after once again hyping over the tree sorts and how they are presented in the Cursed book and in relation to what characters. I'm literally crying and having my mind blown with every new piece of info about the trees symbolism I find!
I did research about the ash tree a while ago (it is mentioned multiple times in the book) and one of my favorite parts of its symbolism is how it was believed to protect children! And we all know which ash fey doesn't hurt children 😉
Squirrel is also told to go hide in a hollow ash tree
But the ash tree appears again this time in the fight scene between Lance and Gawain where it is described as a crooked ash tree and I think that is meant to relate to Lancelot. Later an elder tree is also mentioned and this is where one of my theories I've had a long comes in!
I'm 99% sure Gawain will survive and turn into the literal Green Knight! The elder is apparently associated with good healing properties and the cycle of death and resurrection! There are many reasons as to why I think Gawain will survive but this was a nice addition.
And then the next tree sort appears when Squirrel watches from a distance as Gawain is taken to brother Salt. He is apparently sitting in a black alder tree which is associated with courage (I think this relates to Squirrel) and evolving spirits and ofc death and resurrection!
So the evolving spirits and death and resurrection part I think once again ties to Gawain. I also forgot to mention that the other tree, the elder was also believed to ward off evil spirits and I just love how that could be symbolized when Gawain talks to Lance.
He makes Lance question his loyalty to Carden aka evil spirit. Now back to the alder tree. It says it could also represent fire and earth and I have had some different theories about who represents air and earth in the series (since Nimue and Lance seem to be water and fire)
Lastly I want to add that the alder has qualities that apparently made it a good material for building bridges and my first thought is "Squirrel is gonna be a bridge between Nimue and Lancelot" ☺ Anyway, I hope you could follow along my symbolism hype 😅
Oak is also mentioned if I remember correctly but I won't write about that now, however I will probably add to this thread later. Until then: Born in the dawn...
Already gonna add some 😅 Anyway, the elder is also associated with grief (aka Gawains death) but it also says the following about it (see picture below). So theory: The fey will have summer again (aka victory and fortune) only when he has resurrected and become the Green Knight.
Connected to my "Gawain will survive" theory that I already have posted on insta, is the so called "Fingers of Airimid" aka the vines that appear on Nimues cheeks that I've also done research about and the mythology around it reminds me a lot of how Nimue tries to heal him!
Keep in mind, these are simply my interpretations of the symbolism that I found about the trees and how it connects to and is possible forshadowing for the story going forward. 🙂
I need to add to this thread! So I was playing a game and the names Ask and Embla came up (basically the norse mythology version of Adam and Eve) and Ask is also the name of the ash tree so let's just say Ask represents Lancelot. Now to Embla. She is also called Alm which-
is also a tree, the elm tree. And I just did some quick research on the symbolism of the elm tree and it screams Nimue to me! In summary it is associated with water and earth and is apparently lasts well in wet conditions (Nimue will survive the river).
It is also said to symbolize new beginnings "Death is not the end Fey Queen" AND is also said to be a living connection between the living and the dead! And an gatekeeper of sorts between the dead, living and faerie land! (Avalon? 👀)
It also symbolizes intuition, wisdom and I also think it said something about leadership. It also said that if someone hurt the elm tree (cut it down for example) that person would be given misfortune. I don't remember the elm being mentioned in the Cursed book like many others
But I still think it is very interesting and connects a lot to Nimue and her story. If Cursed ends with Lancelot and Nimue ruling Avalon I feel like they would be the Adam/Ask and Eve/Embla to the fey. That's all for now 😅
